"For nothing will be impossible with God."

― Luke 1:37 (ESV)

Overcoming a Huge Deficit

Oftentimes throughout the Fantasy Football season, the winner of our weekly matchup isn't decided until Monday Night Football takes place. Usually, either we and/or our opponent has someone playing in that game, and we're rooting hard to pull out the Fantasy win based on the players' performances.

When the matchup is reasonably close and both teams have players in the game, we hang on every catch, rushing yard, or touchdown because it affects the score and the potential outcome.

Sometimes, just one player is playing on our team, and we need him to score a few points for us to win. It's always a relief when this happens early on in the game, and then we can sit back and enjoy the rest of Monday Night Football.

Every season, and sometimes multiple times, there is a matchup in our league where one team has a huge deficit heading into Monday Night Football, and they need an absolute miracle to pull out the win. This type of scenario is what I want to focus on.

If we've played Fantasy Football for any length of time, we've found ourselves down by 30 points with our running back playing in Monday Night Football. Or we've been down by 50, and we have a wide receiver and a tight end still left to play. Then, against all odds, we overcame the huge deficit with a remarkable comeback and breakthrough, securing the big win, thanks to the players!

Before the game, based on the circumstances and our perspective, we probably felt there was no way we could overcome being down by so much, and it seemed insurmountable and impossible. We felt discouraged, with little hope of delivering a huge performance and earning a win.

Thankfully, that's when Fantasy Football provides us those opportunities to experience victory when defeat seemed like the only possibility, considering where the matchup stood heading into Monday Night Football. When we win like that, realizing how far down we were, we become filled with so much gratitude and excitement as we celebrate what our players did for us.

Of course, it isn't good being on the other side of it, but for our purposes, let's focus on the miracle win!

In our own lives, there are seasons and situations where we find ourselves facing a huge deficit, longing for a breakthrough, desiring to overcome, and hoping things turn around. Based on our circumstances and our perspective, it feels insurmountable and impossible, which leaves us discouraged, heartbroken, and overwhelmed by how much we're "down."

Thankfully, that's when God provides us opportunities to experience victory when defeat seemed like the only possibility. We serve a God who is all-powerful, and nothing is impossible for Him. He is the ultimate miracle-maker, able to deliver us from the most difficult situations, helping us break through when we thought it couldn't happen.

When we see Him work in these amazing ways and realize how far down we were, we become filled with so much gratitude and excitement as we celebrate what our God has done for us.

The most crucial way we see this play out is based on the most overwhelming deficit we face because we are born with a sinful nature as we enter a broken world. We must realize that God is Holy and our sin separates us from Him, and we deserve death. We must understand it's impossible for us to personally ever have a good enough performance to overcome this.

Thankfully, Jesus paid the penalty for our sins on our behalf, as He was the perfect sacrifice on the cross. He made a way for us to overcome our massive deficit…our sin debt.

Colossians 2:13-14 (AMP) tells us, "When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh (worldliness, manner of life), God made you alive together with Christ, having [freely] forgiven us all our sins, having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of legal demands [which were in force] against us and which were hostile to us. And this certificate He has set aside and completely removed by nailing it to the cross."

Jesus overcame sin and death so that we could be saved and live eternally with Him. We know we could never "score enough points" or do enough good things to win or save ourselves, but thankfully, Jesus accomplished the victory for us. As we place our faith in Him, we now celebrate with gratitude and praise Him as we live the rest of our lives on earth, knowing we are victorious.

1 John 5:4-5 (NLT) explains, "For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith. And who can win this battle against the world? Only those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God."

Jesus says in John 16:33 (NLT), "I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth, you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world."

There is no greater victory than knowing God and understanding that when we are in Christ, we are overcomers. Nothing is impossible with God, so let's trust Him, serve Him, and worship Him as we witness His power at work in our lives.

"Now to Him who is able to [carry out His purpose and] do superabundantly more than all that we dare ask or think [infinitely beyond our greatest prayers, hopes, or dreams], according to His power that is at work within us..." (Ephesians 3:20; AMP).

Heavenly Father, I acknowledge that I am a sinner in need of a Savior. I recognize the weight of my sin, and I know I can’t save myself. I trust in Jesus and believe He has paid my sin debt, and because of my faith in Him, I have overcome a deficit I couldn’t overcome on my own. Thank you for the victory I have in Christ. Please help me to live as an overcomer, trusting in You for miracles and breakthroughs. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

Former running back Maurice Jones-Drew once intentionally took a knee at the one-yard line instead of scoring a touchdown. Because he "owned" himself on his own Fantasy team, his move cost him a loss for the week.
